3G iPhone Release Date Allegedly Confirmed
Let the games begin. Or should we say, let the games continue? It has long since been predicted that WWDC will bring with it an official announcement and introduce the world to the next-generation iPhone that we’ve all been waiting for. New word comes from “sources close to the 3G iPhone launch” that June 9th, the first day of WWDC, will in fact be the day that the Jobsinator announces the new iPhone. We know what you’re thinking; “A 3G iPhone… I had no idea!” Hard to believe, we know. In terms of a launch schedule, the US might have access to the reincarnation of the Jesus phone a week or two before most other regions but the scheduling should be pretty close. There’s also word that the policy shackles in terms of pricing and other restrictions will likely escape the new model and carriers will be able to subsidize the handset, at least to an extent. Speculate all you want; at this point we’re seemingly less than four weeks away from Apple’s big day. We hope you called June 9th in the contest post so you have a chance of scoring yourself some free 3G iPhone love!
Orange preparing to offer upgrade incentive for new iPhone?
In move that would be very welcome over here in the States, it looks like Orange France might be offering incentives to attract current iPhone owners to the next generation device. Apparently, the company is offering current iPhone owners a new 3G iphone for 50 Euros if they trade in their old device. Current users wishing to upgrade and hold on to their current handset can expect “generous subsidies”. Orange hasn’t released any official statement on the matter, so we’re not sure how widespread the incentive program may .
iCall Will Switch Your iPhone to VoIP Mid-Call
A small VoIP company called iCall has ported their software to the iPhone, allowing users to reroute ongoing calls to their free VoIP service in a matter of seconds. The app actively scans for accessible Wi-Fi networks and prompts the user to transfer the call once connected.
It goes without saying that the service won't work over Edge, and will almost certainly not place calls over 3G data, but considering how much of the day many people spend drenched in Wi-Fi, iCall has some serious minute-saving potential. iCall should be available as soon as the official App Store is up and running, and will likely be just as free as the desktop client. The makers sound confident that they will be listed in the app store, which provides additional confirmation that VoIP services won’t be totally barred from the platform. iCall enables seamless GSM to WiFi switching on iPhone
VoIP has been ushered onto the iPhone in quite a few incarnations, but we’d wager than none of ‘em are as useful as iCall. Said application is currently in beta form, though a release isn’t quite ready for the public at large. Put simply, it enables iPhones to switch from GSM to WiFi (when WiFi is nearby, of course) on-the-fly in order to save cell minutes and bypass the hassle of manually changing over. Interested? Review: Linksys SPA942 internet phone
Originally from Sipura – the VoIP specialist acquired by Linksys’ parent Cisco in 2005 – the SPA942 is a Sip-based (Session Initiation Protocol) IP phone that can be used with an in-house exchange and/or public Sip services. Aimed at the business user, it can support up to four lines and features an extensive list of call-handling options.
Unlike cheaper IP handsets we’ve seen, the SPA942 is a solid and professional-looking piece of kit with a positive key action and built-in speakerphone. It can be used flat on a desk, propped upright using the stand provided, or wall-mounted. A user-programmable backlit display is also built in with four associated softkeys and directional menu button. Plus there’s a headphone socket, voicemail indicator and dedicated message retrieval and call-hold buttons.
A two-port Ethernet switch is built into the hardware. One is marked Wan and is used to attach the phone to the network. The other enables a desktop PC to share the same connection, helping to reduce the amount of cabling required. Support for 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) comes as standard, with a separate AC adapter as an option where PoE isn’t available.
Installation was straightforward, although somewhat complicated by the number of programming options available. Unless otherwise configured, the phone gets its IP address using DHCP, after which you enter the required Sip line connection settings via a remote web browser. Up to two independent Sip connections can be programmed with support for two more via a licence upgrade.
Users can then set up their own personal directory (up to 100 entries) and speed dials. They can also choose customised ringtones, with distinctive ringing based on calls made and received as a standard feature.
Other options are dependent on the PBX or gateway service involved, but the firmware supports an impressive range of business telephony features. Everything from putting calls on hold with selective or automatic forwarding, through to call pickup, music on hold and intercom facilities. A call-timer is built in, along with basic call-logging features.
We tested the phone using first a Windows-based PBX (Swyx – see review on page 134) then a couple of public Sip services (Free World Dialup and Sipgate). All were very simple to configure, requiring just a username, password and the URL of the Sip gateway.
We did, however, experience a few problems with a Nat-protected internet connection and dynamic addressing. However, these are common to all Sip-based services and we discovered plenty of online help, much of it specific to the Linksys hardware. The only real issue was the initially baffling array of options, few of which need any form of tweaking to get the phone to work.
Call quality will, of course vary depending on the service and network infrastructure. However, with a good choice of codecs available (the firmware that does the digital voice encoding/decoding), we achieved results on a par with a conventional business phone, and overall we were very impressed with the Linksys package.
Another plus is the ability to securely configure the phone remotely, enabling service providers and resellers to set up and upgrade the phone to work with their services in advance.

A Dect phone with support for multiple VoIP call providers
Internet telephony is most useful when it’s easy to use, and Siemens’ S450IP sets out to make standards-based SIP telephony as easy as an ordinary phone.
It’s a Dect handset that also plugs into your Lan, so you can make calls using the fixed line or a SIP provider.
Setting up SIP accounts can be done via a simple wizard. You choose one service as the default and calls are automatically routed that way. Hold the green phone key longer and calls go via the other route; emergency calls can be routed automatically to the fixed line. It’s easy, and works very well.
You’ll be told if a call is via the internet or landline on a large, colourful screen. This screen also lets you browse the 150-number directory; individual entries can be marked as VIP and given their own ring tones. You can import contact details, but it's a fiddly process.
There’s support for SMS with predictive text, though it’s not as easy to use as on a mobile with proper T9 texting. On top of that, there’s also a Jabber client built in, so the phone can receive instant messages. We had no problem chatting to Google Talk users, but you’ll need to use a PC to set up your buddy list. And as if that’s not enough, you can even enter details of a Pop3 account and you’ll be notified of new messages – though you can’t read them on the phone.
Homes with several users will appreciate the ability to add extra handsets. Each one can be set up to use a specific SIP account for outgoing calls, and to ring only for particular accounts too. Only two simultaneous calls are possible, but it’s still a great way to provide a complete phone system.

Linksys WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone Review
The Linksys WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone is one of the coolest gadgets I've tested in awhile. Linksys sent me a WIP330 for a product review two weeks ago and I played around with it quite a bit, but just never found the time to write the review. Well, here goes, an exclusive look at the Linksys WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone...
The Linksys WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone enables VoIP service through a Wireless-G network connected to the Internet to make low-cost VoIP calls through your Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP). The handset features peer-to-peer dialing, speed dial, 3-way conferencing, call waiting, call transfer, and call forward, mute, hold and selectable ringtones. The Linksys WIP330 measures 46.7 x 135.2 (142.0 with Ant) x 18.8 x mm (1.84 x 5.32 (5.59)x 0.74 in) and weighs 0.119 kg (4.20 oz). It uses a 3.7V 1250mAh Lithium Battery, and includes a 5V 1.0A AC Adapter, but can also be charged using a mini-USB plug.
It's worth mentioning that Linksys makes a similar model, called the WIP300. The WIP300 and WIP330 are similar in that both models let you do VoIP from 802.11b/g WiFi networks and support SIP and the SIP v2 standards. The similarities end there. The WIP330 is the higher-end model, sporting a larger 2.2" LCD screen vs. 1.8" LCD for the WIP300. The WIP330 unit adds hotspot support and the ability to browse the Web on its 2.2-inch color display. The WIP300 on the other hand doesn't have Web capabilities, but it's also less expensive ($219.99 vs. $369.99). The WIP330 runs on the Windows CE 4.2 operating system which enables it to run the CE-version of Internet Explorer for access to just about any web page content. Although, I wasn't able to view my Linksys webcam which uses an ActiveX control from this mini-IE version. Linksys claims that you can receive live video on the WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone when you access any web camera, including the Linksys WVC54GC Wireless-G Internet Video Camera. I actually just got my hands on a cool that I am reviewing but wasn't able to get it to work with the WIP330. When trying to connect to my home webcam I receive an authentication dialog box and the number keypad won't let me enter in my username/password - it just ignores my key presses as the cursor flashes slowly as though mocking my attempts to access my home webcam. I'll have to contact Linksys tech support on that one.
Installation
In any event, installing and setting up the WIP330 was a breeze and in fact I didn't need to read the manual to do it - always a good thing. Linksys is known for easy, turnkey networking solutions, so considering the complexity of WiFi combined with configuring VoIP SIP settings, I was impressed with how easy the phone was to install. One caveat - Linksys pre-configured the SIP settings for me, but I checked them out and could have just as easily entered the info myself.
WiFi Settings
After first turning on the phone, I simply added my WiFi router's SSID and the WEP encryption key and the WIP330 acquired an IP address, DNS settings, etc. from the DHCP server. Next, I made my first test call by dialing the phone number that Linksys pre-configured on the device. I dialed 1-415-762-XXXX and the WIP330 rang and displayed the CallerID of the caller. It doesn't support CallerID with Name, however if you add the phone number to the Phonebook and associate a contact record, it will display the name of the contact. The handset stores the last 20 call history records and can save 250 phone book entries. When entering contacts using the 10-digits on the keypad, you have to have fast fingers when entering in the alphanumeric characters or risk it moving onto next letter. If I hesitated for a split second, it moved to the next character. The delay should be user-configurable.
The sound quality was excellent, which is attributable to the G.168 echo cancellation, jitter buffer control, and packet loss concealment. The comfort noise generation (CNG) also helps the voice quality perception. The phone supports the usual codec suspects, including G.729ab, G.711u, and G.711a. While you are on a call, you can mute the call, put the caller on cold and even answer a second call on Line-2. In fact, I initiated a 2nd call to 1-415-762-XXXX from another phone and I heard a series on tones on the ear-piece indicating a 2nd inbound call. I was able to take that call which automatically put the first caller on hold. Simply by pressing the softkey button underneath "Switch" on the LCD caused it to toggle between the two calls. Next, I pressed the softkey button underneath "Options" and was able to select "Conference" which then conferenced the three phone devices together (2 landlines & 1 WIP330 IP connection). The web browser is the Windows CE version. Entering in URLs using just a number pad is a bit of a pain, but with a little practice I was able to quickly navigate some sites on the 2.2" LCD screen. Although you can browse the web on the phone, really the browser's primary purpose is to allow you to logon to hotspots, hotel WiFi networks, and other WiFi networks that require some sort of Web-based authentication - often used to ask for billing info. I tested the browser and it worked pretty well, but you'll definitely want to add your commonly visited sites to the Favorites, since I already stated, typing on the number pad is tedious.
The Linksys WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone enables VoIP service through a Wireless-G network connected to the Internet to make low-cost VoIP calls through your Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP). The handset features peer-to-peer dialing, speed dial, 3-way conferencing, call waiting, call transfer, and call forward, mute, hold and selectable ringtones. The Linksys WIP330 measures 46.7 x 135.2 (142.0 with Ant) x 18.8 x mm (1.84 x 5.32 (5.59)x 0.74 in) and weighs 0.119 kg (4.20 oz). It uses a 3.7V 1250mAh Lithium Battery, and includes a 5V 1.0A AC Adapter, but can also be charged using a mini-USB plug.
It's worth mentioning that Linksys makes a similar model, called the WIP300. The WIP300 and WIP330 are similar in that both models let you do VoIP from 802.11b/g WiFi networks and support SIP and the SIP v2 standards. The similarities end there. The WIP330 is the higher-end model, sporting a larger 2.2" LCD screen vs. 1.8" LCD for the WIP300. The WIP330 unit adds hotspot support and the ability to browse the Web on its 2.2-inch color display. The WIP300 on the other hand doesn't have Web capabilities, but it's also less expensive ($219.99 vs. $369.99). The WIP330 runs on the Windows CE 4.2 operating system which enables it to run the CE-version of Internet Explorer for access to just about any web page content. Although, I wasn't able to view my Linksys webcam which uses an ActiveX control from this mini-IE version. Linksys claims that you can receive live video on the WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phone when you access any web camera, including the Linksys WVC54GC Wireless-G Internet Video Camera. I actually just got my hands on a cool that I am reviewing but wasn't able to get it to work with the WIP330. When trying to connect to my home webcam I receive an authentication dialog box and the number keypad won't let me enter in my username/password - it just ignores my key presses as the cursor flashes slowly as though mocking my attempts to access my home webcam. I'll have to contact Linksys tech support on that one.
Installation
In any event, installing and setting up the WIP330 was a breeze and in fact I didn't need to read the manual to do it - always a good thing. Linksys is known for easy, turnkey networking solutions, so considering the complexity of WiFi combined with configuring VoIP SIP settings, I was impressed with how easy the phone was to install. One caveat - Linksys pre-configured the SIP settings for me, but I checked them out and could have just as easily entered the info myself.
WiFi Settings
After first turning on the phone, I simply added my WiFi router's SSID and the WEP encryption key and the WIP330 acquired an IP address, DNS settings, etc. from the DHCP server. Next, I made my first test call by dialing the phone number that Linksys pre-configured on the device. I dialed 1-415-762-XXXX and the WIP330 rang and displayed the CallerID of the caller. It doesn't support CallerID with Name, however if you add the phone number to the Phonebook and associate a contact record, it will display the name of the contact. The handset stores the last 20 call history records and can save 250 phone book entries. When entering contacts using the 10-digits on the keypad, you have to have fast fingers when entering in the alphanumeric characters or risk it moving onto next letter. If I hesitated for a split second, it moved to the next character. The delay should be user-configurable.
The sound quality was excellent, which is attributable to the G.168 echo cancellation, jitter buffer control, and packet loss concealment. The comfort noise generation (CNG) also helps the voice quality perception. The phone supports the usual codec suspects, including G.729ab, G.711u, and G.711a. While you are on a call, you can mute the call, put the caller on cold and even answer a second call on Line-2. In fact, I initiated a 2nd call to 1-415-762-XXXX from another phone and I heard a series on tones on the ear-piece indicating a 2nd inbound call. I was able to take that call which automatically put the first caller on hold. Simply by pressing the softkey button underneath "Switch" on the LCD caused it to toggle between the two calls. Next, I pressed the softkey button underneath "Options" and was able to select "Conference" which then conferenced the three phone devices together (2 landlines & 1 WIP330 IP connection). Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP or Broadband phone service as it is often referred to, is changing the telephony world. Traditional phone lines are slowly being phased out as businesses and households around the world embrace the benefits and features that VoIP technology has to offer. As this evolution accelerates, it is worthwhile to stop and take a look at the history of VoIP. The history of VoIP shows that this technology started as far back as 1995 when a small company called Vocaltec released, what was believed to be, the first internet phone software. This software was designed to run on a home PC and much like the PC phones used today, it utilized sound cards, microphones and speakers. The software was called "Internet Phone" and used the H.323 protocol instead of the SIP protocol that is more prevalent today. Vocaltec had initial success with Internet Phone, and had a successful IPO in 1996. It was the Skype of the mid 90s. A major drawback in 1995 was the lack of broadband availability, and as such, this software used modems which resulted in poor voice quality when compared to a normal telephone call. However, this was still a major milestone as it represented the first ever IP Phone. It is also worthwhile to mention that one of Vocaltec’s key employees is also a founder of Whichvoip.com.
By 1998, VoIP traffic had grown to represent approximately 1% of all voice traffic in the United States. Entrepreneurs were jumping on the bandwagon and were creating devices which enabled PC-to-phone and phone-to-phone communication. Networking manufacturers such as Cisco and Lucent introduced equipment that could route and switch the VoIP traffic and as a result by the year 2000, VoIP traffic accounted for more than 3% of all voice traffic.
Now, in 2005, major voice quality issues have long since been addressed and VoIP traffic can be prioritized over data traffic to ensure reliable, clear sounding, unbroken telephone calls. Revenue from VoIP equipment sales alone are projected to reach around $3 billion this year and are being forecast to be over $8.5 billion by the end of 2008. This is primarily being driven by low cost unlimited calling plans and the abundance of enhanced and useful telephony features associated with VoIP technology.
This is a phenomenal growth rate and with the rapid introduction of Video over IP fueling demand, the future of this technology is truly exciting and will enable us to enjoy products that our grandparents and even parents never thought were possible. BroadSoft and JoeDeveloper.NET Debut Facebook VoIP App
JoeDeveloper.NET has quickly developed a Facebook VoIP app called Click2Message that uses BroadSoft’s carrier-grade Broadworks Platform. Comparisons of course will be made with Ribbit, which launched late last year and which also is targeting developers. And then of course there are plenty of companies out there offering VoIP widgets & call me buttons that you can place on a website - including but not limited to Skype, Jangl, Jaxtr, and TringMe. How to Record VoIP Phone Calls Using an IP Phone
Record VoIP Phone Calls Using an IP Phone
There are two options available if you want to record VoIP Phone Calls using an IP Phone:
Option 1 Run Axon Virtual PBX and the VRS Voice Recording System together from your network (highly recommended).
Option 2 Run either the VRS Voice Recording System or the TRx Call Recording System from a computer connected to your IP Phone via a call recording adapter.
Option 1
Setup Instructions
Install Axon on your network's server machine.
Install VRS on your network's server machine.
In VRS, go to the Settings dialog and click the "Devices" tab. Under the "Virtual Audio Sources (VoIP)" section, add a new VoIP recording line, specifying a name, access code (password), plus the recording destination folder. Click OK, then back in the "Devices" tab, ensure that "Run Server on TCP/IP Port" is set to 4080.
Plug your IP phone into a spare port on your network and power it up.
Nominate an extension number in Axon that you would like to assign to your IP phone and configure the phone with the appropriate extension username, password and proxy server details. If you do not know what details to configure, click "Setup Instructions" for that line in the Axon web panel Extensions section.
In Axon you should have setup an external line to map to the extension number configured into the IP phone. You can do this now if you haven't done so already. Once this is done, you need to setup recording on the external line if you want to record incoming calls, and the extension line if you want to record outgoing calls. For both the external and internal lines, you can click on the lines in the Axon web panel to access their properties.
The setup for both scenarios is as follows:
Under the "Call Recorder" section in the line properties, click on "Click here to set the Recorder Settings".
Set the "VRS Host Name" to "localhost:4080" and the "VRS Access Code" to the password you used when creating the VoIP recording line in VRS previously.
Save the changes.
Then back in the line properties check the box "Record Incoming Calls" if you are editing an external line, and "Record Outgoing Calls" if you are editing an extension line.
Save the changes here.
You can now make calls through your IP phone and VRS will record all conversations.
Advantages with this setup
The recording mechanism is controlled centrally, thus administrators have complete control over the recording of conversations on their network.
Disadvantages with this setup
The phone calls are tapped in the middle of the line and not at one end, therefore the act of recording may introduce some delay into the conversation. If VRS is installed, for example, on the same network as one of the parties, then the effect will be minimised. But if it is installed on a third party network in a different country, then the effect will be more noticeable.
Recommendations
This setup is suitable for those who have IP phones rolled out on their network and would find it difficult to change to a softphone/USB phone solution. Administrators who are willing to compromise a certain amount of phone call quality for the benefit of having full control over the call recordings should consider this option.
Option 2
Setup Instructions
Install VRS or TRx on any Windows computer, it can be part of a network or it can have a direct connection to the Internet.
Plug your IP phone into a spare network port physically near the VRS/TRx computer and power it up.
Connect the Call Recording Adapter between the handset and base of the IP phone and then plug it into the Microphone socket of the VRS/TRx computer's sound card.
3a. If using VRS, in VRS go to the Settings dialog and click the "Devices" tab. Under the "Record Channels" section, add a new recording line. Give it a name, and set the record device to the sound card into which you plugged the adapter, and set the record input to "Microphone". The other options there can be changed as desired or left as-is.
3b. If using TRx, in TRx go to the Settings dialog and click the "Devices" tab. Select the option "Record using a Sound Card with Phone Adapter", and set the record device to the sound card into which you plugged the adapter, and set the record input to "Microphone". The other options there can be changed as desired or left as-is.
You can now make calls through your IP phone and VRS/TRx will record all conversations.
Advantages with this setup
The phone calls are tapped at one end of the line, therefore the act of recording has little to no impact on the quality of the audio.
Disadvantages with this setup
The recording mechanism is not controlled centrally, thus anyone using the computer connected to the IP phone has the power to turn off the recording manually. Administrators wanting complete control over the recording of conversations on their network may not liking giving this power into the hands of the network users.
Recommendations
This setup is suitable for those who either have already purchased handset-based call recording adapters or who prefer users of the IP phones be "tethered" to a computer in order to make phone calls. Administrators who are fussy about maintaining optimal phone call quality and who can trust that users will not modify the recording settings in VRS/TRx should consider this option.

Setup Instructions
Install VRS or TRx on any Windows computer, it can be part of a network or it can have a direct connection to the Internet.
Plug your IP phone into a spare network port physically near the VRS/TRx computer and power it up.
Connect the Call Recording Adapter between the handset and base of the IP phone and then plug it into the Microphone socket of the VRS/TRx computer's sound card.
3a. If using VRS, in VRS go to the Settings dialog and click the "Devices" tab. Under the "Record Channels" section, add a new recording line. Give it a name, and set the record device to the sound card into which you plugged the adapter, and set the record input to "Microphone". The other options there can be changed as desired or left as-is.
3b. If using TRx, in TRx go to the Settings dialog and click the "Devices" tab. Select the option "Record using a Sound Card with Phone Adapter", and set the record device to the sound card into which you plugged the adapter, and set the record input to "Microphone". The other options there can be changed as desired or left as-is.
You can now make calls through your IP phone and VRS/TRx will record all conversations.
Advantages with this setup
The phone calls are tapped at one end of the line, therefore the act of recording has little to no impact on the quality of the audio.
Disadvantages with this setup
The recording mechanism is not controlled centrally, thus anyone using the computer connected to the IP phone has the power to turn off the recording manually. Administrators wanting complete control over the recording of conversations on their network may not liking giving this power into the hands of the network users.

This setup is suitable for those who either have already purchased handset-based call recording adapters or who prefer users of the IP phones be "tethered" to a computer in order to make phone calls.
